야구에서 타자의 가장 기본적인 목표는 무엇일까. 살아나간다는 것, 다시 말해 1루를 밟는 것이야말로 타자라면 누구나 생각하는 ‘원초적’인 욕구일 것이다. 그래서 간혹 홈런을 친 선수들도 “그저 1루에 나가기만 하면 된다는 생각으로 휘둘렀다”는 소감을 밝히곤 한다.

그렇다면 공격팀 선수가 1루에 나갈 수 있는 방법은 도대체 몇 가지나 될까. “그거야 뭐 뻔하지. 안타, 볼넷, 몸에 맞는 볼, 실책, 그리고…, 그리고….” 아마 야구를 좋아하는 팬들조차도 이 정도에서 말문이 막혀버리지는 않을까. 미국의 스포츠전문 채널 ESPN이 펴낸 스포츠 상식 서적 <앤서 가이(Answer Guy)>는 ‘합법적으로 1루에 도달할 수 있는 방법(legal ways to get to first)’이 무려 23가지나 된다고 주장해 흥미를 끌고 있다.

먼저 쉬운 방법부터 생각해 보자. 가장 흔히 볼 수 있는 장면은 타자가 안타를 때리거나 볼넷, 또는 몸에 맞은 볼을 얻어내 1루에 안착하는 것이다. 볼넷 중에는 투수가 의도적으로 내주는 고의 4구도 있다. 투 스트라이크 이후 헛 스윙을 했을 때 투구가 포수 뒤로 빠지는 스트라이크 아웃 낫아웃과 야수의 도움(?)이 필요한 실책과 야수 선택 역시 타자가 1루에 진출할 수 있는 방법이다.

이제 겨우 7가지가 나왔을 뿐이다. 나머지 방법들을 하나 하나 짚어보자. 내야 땅볼 때 앞선 주자가 포스 아웃되거나, 협공에 걸려 아웃돼도 타자는 1루에서 살 수 있다. 비슷한 경우이지만 보내기 번트에 실패(선행 주자가 아웃)했을 때도 타자는 1루에 남는 경우가 있다.

간혹 실제로 나오곤 하는 포수의 타격 방해와 페어 지역으로 날아간 공이 심판에게 맞거나, 주자의 몸에 닿았을 때, 야수가 주자의 진행을 방해했을 때도 타자에게 1루 진루권이 주어진다. 야수 실책으로 기록되기는 하지만 희생 플라이 타구를 야수가 놓치는 것도 타자가 1루를 밟을 수 있는 또 하나의 방법이다.

자, 이 정도면 거의 다 된 것일까. 아니다. 이제부터는 실제 경기에서는 보기 드물지만 이론적으로는 가능한 방법들이 좀 남아 있다. 투수가 마운드 위에서 20초(한국은 15초)가 지나도록 공을 던지지 않으면 볼이 선언되므로 스리 볼 이후라면 볼넷을 얻어낼 수 있다. 또 투수의 부정 투구 때도 타자에게 1루를 내주어야 한다. 거기에다 야수가 타석까지 와서 타격을 방해하는 경우, 관중의 타격 방해, 경기를 지켜보던 관계자들의 타격 방해도 있다.

지금까지 나온 방법은 20가지. 더 남은 방법이 있을까. “이제 다 나온 것 아닌가”라고 반문할지도 모르겠다. 하지만 타석에 서 있는 타자만 쳐다보지 말고 시야를 덕아웃까지 넓혀보자. 주자로서도 분명 1루에 나갈 수 있지 않은가. 가장 쉬운 예는 대주자로 나가는 것, 그리고 주자가 심판 판정에 대한 항의로 퇴장 당했을 때 대신 1루를 밟을 수도 있다.

이제 정말 하나 남았다. 이 마지막 방법을 맞힐 수 있는 팬이라면 진정한 ‘야구 매니아’라 불러도 무방할 것 같다. 주자가 1루에 있는 상황에서 서스펜디드 게임이 선언됐는데 그 1루 주자가 다른 팀으로 트레이드됐을 경우 속개 경기 때 그 자리를 다른 선수가 메울 수 있다는 것이 <앤서 가이>가 밝히는 ‘1루에 도달할 수 있는 23번째 방법’이다.

다소 억지스런 면이 없지는 않지만 무릎을 탁 칠 정도로 기발하고 재미 있지 않은가. 야구를 좋아하는 팬이라면 ‘또 다른 방법은 없을까’ 하고 머리를 굴려보는 것도 흥미로운 일이 되지 않을까 싶다. /신화섭 기자 myth@
<2루 주자 1루 역도루도 있네> 23가지로 끝난 것이 아니다. <앤서 가이>는 1루에 도달할 수 있는 기상천외한 방법 한 가지를 더 소개해 주고 있다. 바로 2루 주자가 1루로 '도루(?)'를 해 1루 베이스를 밟는 것이다.

현대 야구에서는 말도 안 되는 얘기이지만 <앤서 가이>에 따르면 1907년 저머니 쉐퍼가 실제 경기에서 2루 주자로 있다 1루를 훔쳤다고 한다. 또 비슷한 시기에 프레드 테니라는 선수도 같은 플레이를 한 적이 있다고 밝힌다.
두 상황의 공통점은 2, 3루에 주자가 있었다는 점. 즉 2루 주자가 1루로 뛰면 투수나 포수가 그 주자를 잡으려고 엉겁결에 공을 던질 것이고, 그 틈을 타 3루 주자가 홈으로 뛰어든다는 어찌 보면 '순진한' 발상이었다. 그 작전이 성공했는지 여부는 전해지지 않고 있다.

그러나 이런 행위는 야구 규칙이 아직 명확하게 정립되지 않은 1900년대 초반의 해프닝일 뿐. 실제로 그럴 일도 없겠지만 3루에서 2루로, 또는 2루에서 1루로 도루를 하는 것은 현대 야구에서는 명백한 불법 행위로 규정돼 있다(2002 공인 야구규칙 7.02 '주자가 진루할 때 1루, 2루, 3루, 본루의 순서에 따라 각 루에 닿아야 한다').
