LA 다저스 '코리아 특급' 박찬호의 올 시즌 성적을 좌우할 열쇠는 체인지업(change up)이다. 그렇다면 체인지업은 무엇인가. 또 한때 야구해설가들이 많이 사용했던 체인지 오브 페이스(Change of pace)와는 어떻게 다른가.
폴 딕슨이 펴낸 ‘야구사전’에 따르면 체인지 오브 페이스는 현대 야구에서 체인지업이라는 용어가 정착됨에 따라 사라진 용어다. 곧 두 용어는 같은 의미다. 체인지업은 타자의 타격 타이밍을 빼앗는 구질을 말한다. 엄격한 의미에서 커브 슬라이더 싱커 등 구종과는 다르다.
체인지업은 직구 커브 등 특정 구종을 던질 때 똑같은 투구폼에서 구속을 바꿔 던지는 공이다. 예를 들어 박찬호가 특정타자를 상대로 제1, 2구를 시속 150㎞의 강속구로 압도하고 제3구를 1, 2구와 똑같은 투구동작으로 시속 135㎞의 직구를 던진다면 어떤 결과가 나올까. 대부분 헛스윙일 것이다. 빠른 커브와 느린 커브도 마찬가지다.
같은 투구폼으로 구속의 가감을 능수능란하게 할 수는 없기 때문에 상당수의 투수들이 그립을 달리해 속도를 조절하게 된다. 최근 유행하는 서클 체인지업이 대표적이다.
