. 감독과 코치의 말을 귀담아 들어라.
감독이나 코치는 각 선수의 장단점을 면밀히 파악해야 하며 선수들은 이들의 말을 순수하게 받아들이는 동시에 항상 감사하는 마음을 가져야 한다. 이것은 바로 선수들이 지녀야 할 가장 중요한 덕목이며 의무라고 하겠다.
2. 러닝은 모든 면의 기본임을 명심하라.
러닝은 야구선수들에게 최고의 컨디션을 유지하게끔 조절해준다. 또한 러닝은 컨디션을 조절해줄 뿐만 아니라 야구에서 가장 중요한 스피드와 스태미너를 축적하는 데 큰 도움을 준다.
최상의 컨디션을 갖기 위해서는
첫째, 강하고 스태미너가 넘치는 육체를 만들어야 한다.
둘째, 스피드와 기민함을 갖추어야 한다.
셋째, 강한 의지를 지녀야 한다.
이 세가지를 생각해 볼 때 모두가 러닝에서 비롯된다는 것을 알 수 있다.
야구를 잘하는 비결은 바로 러닝에 있다는 것을 명심하기 바란다.
3. 기본기를 충실히 지키고 팀플레이에 전념하라.
기본기 중에서 가장 중요한 건 캐치볼이며, 이는 '포구한다'라는 뜻이지만 야구에서는 투구와 포구 모두를 일컫는다. 따라서 단순히 포구만을 의미하는 것이 아님을 분명히 해둔다.
이 기본기야 말로 수비시의 기본임을 명심하고 플레이에 임해야 한다. 또한 땅볼의 포구, 플라이볼의 포구에 대한 기본 자세를 잊어서는 안된다.
또 한가지 중요한 것은 팀플레이에 철저한 선수가 되어야 한다. 이말은 곧 공명심에 사로잡혀서는 안 된다는 것이다.
마지막으로 "본헤드 플레이를 해서는 안 된다"는 말을 명심해야 한다.
4. 투지를 불태워라.
야구에서는 투지(Fighting spirit)가 팀 내부에 확고하게 세워져 있느냐 없느냐에 따라 상당한 차이가 있다.
선수는 상대팀과 싸울 때 맹렬한 공격정신을 지니고 대결해야 한다. 흙과 땀에 뒤범벅이 된채 연습을 견디어낸 훈련정신이 첫경기부터 마지막 경기까지 흐트러짐 없이 발휘되도록 강한 신념을 갖도록 노력해야 한다.
이런 노력의 정신은 바로 감투정신으로 이어져 어떤 사회, 어떤 조직생활에서도 적응하는데 큰 에너지가 될 것이다.
5. 자신의 플레이에 자신감을 가지고, 항상 연구하라.
야구선수는 언제나 팀플레이에 협력하고 자신의 플레이에 자신감을 갖도록 해야 한다.
간혹 실책을 범했다 하더라도 그것은 결코 책망의 대상이 될수 없으므로 실망할 필요도 없다. 이유는 야구에는 반드시 '에러'가 따라다니기 때문이다.
실패에서 발전이 생긴다. 그러므로 실패를 했다 하더라도 이를 밑거름으로 삼아 다음 경기에 대비하는 연구자세가 필요하다. 좀더 나아가 관련 대책을 강구하는 창의성이 가미된다면 금상첨화다.
"자신의 특징을 살려라", "자신의 체력에 알맞는 기술을 몸에 익혀라"라는 격언이 있다. 좋은 플레이를 펼치기 위해서 명심해야 할 내용이다.
6. 삼진을 두려워 말고, 실책에 상심하지 마라.
일부러 삼진이나 실책을 저지르는 선수는 없을 것이다. 모두가 최선을 다하려다 범한 것이다.
반성은 충분히 해야겠지만 차후 적절한 대책을 마련할 줄 알아야 한다.
위축되어 마이너스 지향적인 자세가 나오면 스스로 자신감을 잃을 뿐 아니라 팀 전체를 어둡게 만들어 버린다.
이럴땐 플러스 지향적 사고만이 팀에 용기를 안겨줄 수 있다.
한편 삼진이나 실책을 범한 선수를 책망하는 속좁은 선수가 되지 말아야 한다. 오히려 위로를 해주고 정신적인 도움을 주는 속넓은 선수가 대선수로 될 수 있다.
덧붙인다면 "결코 상대를 두려워 하거나 지나치게 과대평가를 하면 결국 자신만 위축된다."는 사실을 명심하고 경기에 임할 것을 부탁한다.
7. 끝까지 경기를 포기하지 마라.
사람은 자기가 생각한 대로 일이 잘 진행되지 않으면 자포자기하는 행동으로 흐르기 쉽다.
그러나 그 목표가 보람 있고 가치 있는 목표라면 웬만해서는 포기하지 않을 것이다. 불굴의 정신이 있으면 반드시 영광을 누릴 날이 오고야 만다.
8. 건강관리에 유의하라.
모든 운동 선수에게 가장 큰 자산은 건강이다.
그런데도 실상은 어떠한가? 자신의 건강관리에 얼마나 노력을 기울리는지 생각해 보기 바란다.
건강관리야 말로 기량 이전에 생각해야 할 가장 중요한 문제이다.
건강관리의 기본은 우선 식사와 휴식이다.
식사는 편식을 하지 말 것이며 하루 세끼와 허용된 범위 내에서 영양가 높은 음식물을 먹어야 한다. 그리고 휴식은 하루 평균 8시간으로 하되 컨디션을 고려하여 적절하게 조절하는 것도 가능하다. 최소한 취침전에 가벼운 체조를 매일 하는 것이 좋다. 즉 그날의 피로는 그날 풀어야 한다.
9. 어깨, 허리, 발 등을 소중히 하라.
운동을 하는 사람에게 그림자처럼 따라다니는 게 있는데, 바로 부상이다.
따라서 부상방지에 항상 주의를 기울이고 있으리라 생각한다. 선수들은 연습과 경기가 끝나면 특히 어깨, 허리, 발 등을 살펴 피로가 쌓이는 일이 없도록 체조와 마사지를 통해 피로를 씻어내야 한다. 요컨데 자기관리를 철저히 할 필요가 있다는 것이다.
이렇게 한다 하더라도 완벽한 예방은 불가능해서 간혹 신체적 장애를 감지하는 경우를 종종 본다.
이럴 경우 절대 숨기지 말고 감독이나 코치들과 상의하여 큰 문제로 번지지 않도록 해야 한다.
야구에서는 작은 상처 하나가 곧 승부의 갈림길이 되는 경우가 허다하기 때문이다.
10. 유니폼을 단정히 입고 야구용품을 소중히 다루어라.
대체적으로 복장이 단정치 못하면 마음도 단정하지 못하다. 팀을 상징하는 유니폼을 올바르게 입지않고 경기장에 들어서는 경우는 사회인 야구에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 장면이다. 이는 이미 정신적으로 패배한 것이나 다름없다.
또한 야구용품은 야구선수에게 있어 무기와 같아서 평소 소중히 다루고 손질하는데 많은 공을 들여야 한다. 그래야만 경기 때 자기의 손발이 되어 좋은 성과를 올리게 될 것이다.
