알맞은 타격법

타자는 크게 두 가지 형으로 나눌 수 있다.

선천적인 소질로 폼 자체를 수정없이 잘 치는 형(naturals)과,
자신의 끝없는 노력으로 알맞는 타격법을 개발하는(self-mades)형이다.

전자는 히팅에 대해서 깊게 생각하지 않아도 좋은 타격을 할 수 있는 타자이다.
우리가 잘 아는 행크아론(Hank Aaron)과 같은 선수가 이에
해당된다.

그러나 그런 형의 선수가 슬럼프에 빠지면 어떻게 될까?

평소 타격 분석에 대해서 깊게 생각지 않는 경우가 많으므로 문제점을 해결하는데 후자보다 곤란을 겪게 되는
단점이 있다. 어쨌든 선천적으로 뛰어난 감각을 가진 선수는 극소수에 불과하다.
반면 매티 아로우(Matty Aiou)같은 타자는 후자에 해당된다.
그는 오랫동안의 노력 끝에 자신에게 적합한 타격법을 찾아내어 메이저리그에서 수위타자를 차지했었다.
원래 작은 체구에서도 가끔 장타를 날리던 매티 아로우는 신체적으로 알맞는 타격법,
즉 단타(single hit)위주의 타격법으로 바꾸었다.
그리하여 스트라이크 아우크를 당하지 않게 되고 타구의 90% 이상을 땅볼이나 라이너로 쳤다.
플라이볼은 극히 적은 숫자에 불과했다. 이처럼 타자는 자신의 능력에 알맞는 타격법을 선정하는 것이 좋다.
따라서 어린 선수들은 유명선수들의 타격폼이나 패턴(pattern)을 그대로 모방하는 것은 금물이다,

완숙한 상태의 유명선수 폼과 자신의 능력은 큰 차이가 있다는 것을 알아야 한다.
그러므로 어린 선수일수록 후자의 타격법에 주력하여
정확하게 맞히는 능력을 우선 길러야 한다.
