◐사진◑『포크볼 잡는법(2가지)』

'91년 한.일 슈퍼 게임 때 우리 타자들이 가장 애를 먹었던 구질입니다. 그 후 국내 투수들도 포크볼(Folk ball)의 중요성을 깨달았고 이제는 많은 투수들이 이 구질을 구사하고 있습니다. '94년 OB의 봄캠프 대 깜짝놀랄 만한 장면이 있었습니다. OB의 신인 투수 홍우태는 포수가 가끔 잡지 못할 정도의 포크볼을 던지고 있었습니다. 그는 고교 2년 때부터 포크볼을 던졌다고 합니다. 따라서 마음먹기에 따라서는 동양인도 얼마든지 잘 던질 수 있는 구질입니다. 타자들도 중심 이동, 타격 지점 조절 등으로 포크볼을 공략하는데 어느 정도 익숙해지고 있습니다. 그러나 가끔 투수들이 유리한 카운트에서 포크볼을 잘못 던져 홈런을 허용한 후 땅을 치는 경우도 있습니다. 잘못 던져 높게 들어가거나 공이 아래로 떨어지지 않으면 그만큼 위험한 구질입니다. 포크볼은 직구와 체인지업의 중간 구질로 생각하면 됩니다. 즉 '느린 직구'나 '강한 체인지업'이라고 생각하면 됩니다.
공은 둘째, 셋째 손가락을 넓게 벌려 실밥과 나란히 위쪽에 올려 놓고 엄지가 아래쪽에서 받쳐 주는 식으로 잡습니다. 둘째, 셋째 손가락 사이를 넓히려면 어릴 때부터 두 손가락 사이에 공 같은 것을 넣어 넓히면 효과가 있습니다. 포크볼은 팔의 회전이나 동작 모두 직구와 똑같이 던지지만 벌어진 손가락이 힘을 분산시키기 때문에 직구에 비해 속력은 약 9km 정도 느립니다. 포크볼은 홈 플레이트 미트 부근에 이르러 가라앉기 때문에 타자가 치기 어려운 공이며, 요즘 투수들이 많이 사용하려는 변화구 가운데 하나입니다. 어떤 투수들은 직구와 거의 같은 스피드로 포크볼을 던지기도 합니다. 포크볼은 SF볼과 거의 흡사한 구질이지만 스피드는 SF볼이 조금더 빠르고, 변화는 포크볼이 조금 더 많습니다. 국내 투수들 중엔 손가락이 짧아 '반(半) 포크볼'이라고 이름 붙인 구질을 많이 사용합니다.
