● 스윙(swing)의 분석

좋은 타자가 되려면 먼저 기본이론에 충실한 스윙을 할 수 있어야 한다. 튼튼한 기초위에 스피드와 힘을 가미할때 좋은 타자가 될 수 있다. 전에 이미 스윙에는 전체적인 리듬감각이 중요하다고 지적 하었다. 그러면 여기서는 각 과정의 요령을 밝혀보자. 이러한 요령은 몸에 습관화 되도록 연습을 해두어야 한다.

백 스윙을 할때 중요한 것은 다리나 팔의 움직임보다도 히프(hips)의 움직임을 잘 가져가야 한다. 즉, 히프로 백 스윙을 한다는 기분을 갖는 것이 좋다. 손(hands), 손목(wrists), 팔(arms)의 빠른 동작이 타격에서 매우 중요한데 이러한 것도 힘을 발휘하려면 히프를 잘 이용해야 합니다. 대타자(大打者) 태즈 윌리암즈는 다음과 같이 강조한다. "빠른 공을 던지는 투수에게 손과 손목의 힘으로 곧바로 공을 맞힌다면 무슨 힘이 나올 수 있겠는가?

힘은 골프에서와 같이 히프에서 나와야 한다." 따라서 백 스윙할 때에 돌아가는 어깨를 히프가 도와 주어야 더 많은 힘을 집중시킬 수 있다. 즉 백스윙할 때 돌아가는 히프를 수평상태에서 뒷쪽의 다리로 약간 끌어 당기면서 회전시키는 것이 바람직하다. 이러한 점을 기억해 두고서 다음 동작들을 보자. 스탠스는 어깨넓이나 그것보다 약간 넓은 것이 기본형이고, 중심도 양다리에 똑같이 걸치는 것이 기본형이다.

타자는 투구동작에 맞추어 백 스윙에 들어가고, 중심을 뒷쪽의 발에 건다. 즉 전체 동작의 힘을 빼면서 무릎을 약간 굽히고 앞쪽의 발도 뒷쪽의 발 방향으로 약간 들어 발꿈치를 올린다. 이 순간 히프를 돌리면서 수평으로 유지된 어깨에 턱을 붙이고 투수와 정면으로 응시한다. 이때 다리의 힘의 분배는 7:3 정도가 표준이다(앞쪽 다리에 3할 뒷쪽 다리에 7할의 중심), 그리고 앞쪽의 발을 내딛는다. 이 동작에 이어 배트도 뒷쪽으로 약간 당긴다. 이것이 백 스윙인데,

구체적인 방법은 크게 하나 또는 하나 둘의 리듬을 붙여도 좋다.

현대적 타법에서는 팔당김을 아주 적게 하라고 강조하고 있다. 될 수 있는 한 처음부터 톱 스윙에 가까운 상태로 배트를 쥐고, 마음속으로 하나라든가 하나 둘의 리듬을 만들 정도에 그치라는 것이다. 그렇게 하는 것이 오차가 적고 어떠한 변화구에도 순응하기가 쉽다고 판단되기 때문이다. 그러나 발디딤(stride)만하고 팔당김을 전혀 하지 않으면 펀치력이 약하여진다. 그러므로 히프를 주로 이용하고, 팔당김은 적게 하는 것이 바람직하다. 스탠스의 기본형은 왼쪽 팔꿈치에서 왼손까지 이어지는 선이 지면과 평행으로 되는 것이 이상적이다. 그리고 백 스윙한다는 감각을 갖는 것은 좋으나, 손목의 위치가 내려가는 것은 좋지 않다. 오히려 손목 위치가 약간 위로 올라가는 것이 구종이나 코스에 대응하기 쉽고 펀치력이 있다.

발딛기는 눈 위치의 이동을 고려하여 될 수 있는 한 적게 하되, 아무리 크더라도 스탠스의 반은 넘어서는 안 된다. 이러한 발딛기가 크면 힘을 모아서 치기는 편하나 투수가 던진 빠른 공이나 변화구에 적응하기 어렵다. 즉 투수의 공을 보는데 파장이 생겨 포인트를 올바르게 잡기 힘들어진다. 연습시 프리배팅 때에는 발딛기가 크더라도 타이밍을 쉽게 맞출 수 있으나 실전에서는 힘들어진다.

따라서 되도록 발딛기를 작게 해서 힘을 발휘하도록 해야 한다. 물론 노 스탭의 중심 이동한으로는 스윙이 강할 수 없다. 여러 가지로 발딛기를 해보아 가장 알맞은 폭을 개개인이 찾아내도록 하자. 이때 발끝이 열리게(open)되면 몸 전체의 힘이 풀려 강한 힘을 발휘할 수 없다.
