타자들이 가장 겁내는 구질이 커브 볼(Curve Ball)입니다. 커브볼은 무회전이므로 타자입장에서 보면 직구와 똑같이 보이다가 홈플레이트 바로 앞에서 실밥이 선명하게 보이며 뚝 떨어집니다.
빠른 공을 던지는 투수가 뛰어난 커브 볼을 던질 줄 알면 그보다 큰 무기는 없습니다. 그것도 빠른 커브볼, 중간 빠르기의 커브 볼, 느린 커브 볼을 구사하면 아무도 제대로 쳐낼 수 없습니다. 커브는 다른 구질과는 다른 팔 동작이 필요하고 완전히 익히기가 어렵기 때문에 그 사용 횟수가 줄어들고 있는 추세입니다. 대신 슬라이더가 대중화되고 있지요. 하지만 오히려 이 점이 현대 야구에서 커브 볼의 이점을 더 크게 만들고 있습니다. 젊은 타자들일수록 커브 볼에는 익숙하지 않기 때문 입니다. 커브 볼은 타자의 바깥쪽이나 안쪽으로 휘어지는 공이 아니고 쭉 들어오다가 그냥 떨어지는 공입니다. 마치 테이블 위에서 떨어지듯이, 요즘 투수들은 그것에 그치지 않고 바깥쪽으로 휘게 던집니다. 변화가 심할수록 타자에게는 치기 어려운 공이 될 테니까요. 커브 볼은 홈 플레이트 150cm 앞에서부터 변화하기 시작합니다. 아주 드문 경우지만 흔히 폭포 물이 떨어지는 듯한 커브 볼을 던지는 투수들도 있습니다. 커브를 던질 때 팔의 회전을 자전거 바퀴를 연상하면 됩니다. 팔꿈치가 바퀴의 축이 되고 팔꿈치 아랫부분은 바퀴의 살이 되는 것입니다. 중심 역활을 하는 팔꿈치는 움직이지 않으면서 공을 쥔 손을 축을 따라 회전시킵니다. 어린 투수들에게는 팔꿈치를 의식적으로 조금 들어올리라고 말해 주는 것이 좋습니다. 말이 안 되는 소리 같지만, 그렇게 하면 팔꿈치가 제자리에서 이탈하는 것도 막을 수 있고 아랫쪽으로 강한회전을 줄 수도 있습니다. 팔의 회전이 다른 것처럼 손목에서 공을 놓은 것도 다릅니다. 손목은 손목 아랫부분에 비해 5도 에서 10도 정도 치켜올립니다. 또한 다른 구질이 대부분 손끝으로부터 빠져 나가는 데 비해 커브는 엄지와 검지 사이로 빠져 나갑니다. 동작이 이처럼 다르기 때문에 타자들은 커브 볼을 던지는 순간까지 다른 공을 던질 때와 차이가 없도록 노력해야 합니다. 커브 볼은 보통 직구보다 속도가 시속 16km 정도 느립니다. 그러면 커브 볼을 잡는 법을 알아봅시다. 가운데손가락을 실밥과 나란히 잡고 집게손가락을 곁에 놓습니다. 또 마지막 순간까지 강한 회전을 주기 위해 공은 꽉 쥐는 게 좋습니다. 엄지손가락은 투수에 따라 다르게 놓습니다. 관절에 힘이 들어가게 쥐는 투수가 있는 반면, 엄지 끝에 힘을 쥐는 투수도 있습니다. 엄지 관절에 힘을 주는 쪽이 좋은데, 그것은 더 많은 회전과 날카로운 변화를 줄 수 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 대부분의 투수들이 엄지 관절에 힘을 주는 것을 선호합니다.
