◐그림◑『SF볼 잡는법』

많은 투수들이 차츰 발전시킨 것이 SF볼(Split Finger Fastball) 입니다. 이 투구를 구사한 대표적인 인물은 디트로이트 타이거즈의 투수 코치를 거쳐 1992년까지 샌프란시스코 자이언츠의 감독을 지낸 로저 크레이그(Roger Craig)입니다. 이 구질은 가장 최근에 개발된 것 중의 하나입니다.
SF볼은 싱커와 비슷한 구질이기 때문에 비슷한 구질이기 때문에 비슷한 효과를 볼 수 있고, 속도도 직구에 비해 시속 3∼5km밖에 차이나지 않습니다. SF볼은 집게손가락만을 공 위쪽으로 놓고 던지면서 뒤로 회전을 줍니다. 타자의 눈에는 직구와 똑같이 보이고 거의 일직선으로 들어오기 때문에 홈 플레이트에 이를 무렵, 무릎 높이로 스윙을 하게 됩니다. 하지만 SF볼은 홈 플레이트에 이르러 악 45cm 정도 휘어지면서 가라앉기 때문에 헛스윙하는 경우가 많습니다. 또 설사 맞는다 하더라도 내야 땅볼에 그치고 맙니다. 공을 느슨하게 쥐면 속도는 떨어지며, 손목이나 팔꿈치가 꺾일 때 그 꺾이는 동작이 예리할수록 떨어지는 각도도 커집니다.
1980년대부터 미국에서 보편화된 이 구질은 국내에서는 차동철(현 LG)이 해태에 있을 때 처음으로 사용하면서 위력을 발휘했습니다. 요즈음은 국내의 많은 투수들이 즐겨 사용하고 있는데, 손가락이 짧은 선수는 깊게 쥐지 않고 던지기도 합니다.
